Alaskan Humpbacks

Humpback whale lunge-feeding in Alaskan waters.

Our early studies in the summer feeding grounds of humpback whales in southeast Alaskan waters revealed that individual animals were present for as long as 3-5 months (Baker, Herman, Straley et al. 1985).   Based on data collected between 1979 and 1983, the population of whales in southeast Alaska was estimated as between 270-372 whales.
